The myth of Arachne can be seen as an allegory of the relation between art and tyrannical power. Roman poet Ovid (43 BC – 18 AD), the popularizer of the Arachne myth, lived and wrote under the emperor Augustus and was later exiled and persecuted for his work. At the time, weaving was a common metaphor for poetry, therefore Arachne's artistry and Athena's censorship to it may offer a provocative allegory of the artist/writer's role under an autocratic regime.
